Dr Edward Epstein:
"In the British Army during theSecond World War, Dr Epstein visited prisoner-of-war camps (where captured German soldiers were kept). He had spectacles made for a young German soldier so that he could get binocular vision.
"Forty five years later a Dr Rommel visited Dr Epstein in Johannesburg in order to thank him. He was that prisoner and (after the war) he was able to become a thoracic surgeon.
"Dr Rommel's father was a first cousin to Field Marshall Erwin Rommel."

3. Honours: Annual-Epstein Lecture (SASCRS) Cataract Society: Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa.
The Epstein Lecture is dedicated to Dr Edward Epstein, now in retirement, who was the South African pioneer in the development of pseudophakic correction in cataract surgery in the fifties and also a founding member and life long honorary member of the SASCRS.
This lecture is given at each bi-annual Congress of the SASCRS by an ophthalmologist who has distinguished himself by outstanding international and local contributions for the advancement of cataract or refractive surgery.
